An Answer 01:02
I try my best to keep it sealed, The box from which it’s all revealed Keep it close by my brooding brain And come away by the midnight train A friction singeing hopeful men As wistful lunar signs emerge Reflecting there upon a plate of calm French sea I take a peek from time to time To see it with my yearning eyes My doctor holds the truth for all In pills and potions builds a wall To stare away the concrete sleepers No day bereft of wrecks and weapers It seems so long to go, Why don’t you know It seems so long for you to know Why don’t you know I’m begging for an answer.

When you’re walking down the street And the city sleeps at night, How much do you want to keep it up? How much do you want to give away? I left the bottle on the doorstep I left a letter on the way Saw a man at the petrol station Closed again, closed again, closed again, closed again. When your feet get wrought and weary And your back gets cold with sweat How much can you bear to breathe this Stinging place of no chance? I left my things by the back shed And the lock’s what kept me out Yeah the lock’s what kept me out Just crept on by. I took no shame in playing games there I took no shame in peeking in To see the blue light paint the ceiling Those ceilings green When your feet get wrought and weary And your back gets cold with sweat How much can you bear to breathe this Stinging place of no chance? I left the bottle on the doorstep I left a letter on the way Saw a man at the petrol station Closed again, closed again, closed again, closed again. Closed again.

Venom Skies 03:02
I eat this cake alone in the snow. Grandma’s best, soothes the chest. Winter smokestacks blow so high. The red and gold try to lead the rest. Venom, venom, venom skies Don’t you feel freedom when you’re led so wise. Venom, venom, venom skies. Venom, venom, venom skies. Brutal boxes, brutal sighs Venom windows to the venom skies. To hole your way through the deafening hunger Is to purge the lungs of collective demise. Venom, venom, venom lies Don’t you feel freedom when you’re led so wise. Venom, venom, venom skies Venom, venom, venom skies. Selvas, soledad. Selvas, soledad. Selvas soledad venom skies. Muñecas on tree lines Muñecas on tree lines The seas were bridged by the venom skies. Don’t you feel the freedom when you’re led so wise? Venom, venom, venom skies. Venom, venom, led so wise. Venom, venom skies, venom, venom skies...

about

"Abuelito Soledad" ("Grandpa Loneliness" in Spanish, a fictitious entity I imagined, almost like how people talk about "Father Time") was dormant for a while as a series of songs I was working on while I was still living in Pisa. They were conceived during the countless long walks I took around there. Each place evoking a different feeling.

All words and instrumentation by Novelty Citizen. Vocals, acoustic guitar, folk harp, upright piano, electric guitar, fretless bass, drum kit, cajon, djembe, synthesiser. Part of an initial experimentation into dual drums and chanting.

Recorded in Toronto, December 2015.
