about

Inspired by Joni Mitchell’s story of growing up in Saskatoon, saying hello to the passing train conductor as he went by each day. A story that I feel can connect to many people’s experiences growing up in a smaller place, but getting glimpses of the larger world out there.

lyrics

I see a train go by my house each morning.
It goes through without pause.

These, frozen roads, don’t lead to anywhere beyond.
I’ll stay behind as long as I’m not forced along.
These frozen roads won’t lead to anywhere behind.
I’ll stay beyond as long as I’m not forced along.

I poke my head out of the window,
To my dreams that will not thaw.
I’ll never meet that driver,
Much less what is here to draw.

These, frozen roads, don’t lead to anywhere beyond.
I’ll stay behind as long as I’m not forced along.
These frozen roads won’t lead to anywhere behind.
I’ll stay beyond as long as I’m not forced along.

Flash forward ten years later,
Guess I’ve made myself amends
I’m not quite the same person.
Have dropped some older trends
No roadblocks or diversions.
That road saw a few hard bends.

These, frozen roads, don’t lead to anywhere beyond.
I’ll stay behind as long as I’m not forced along.
These frozen roads won’t lead to anywhere behind.
I’ll stay beyond as long as I’m not forced along.

I blew through town by moonlight. It went without a pause.
